Job Description:

January 2022 saw the launch of a major new consortium, Media Cymru (Wave 2 Strength in Places UKRI award) aimed at accelerating innovation in Wales’ screen sector over the next five years. This role will provide the right candidate with the opportunity to work as part of this 22-partner consortium of industry, HEI, and public sector partners to improve the capabilities for innovation and growth in the screen sector. It is an excellent opportunity to help bring about change in this flourishing, bilingual sector and deliver a more cohesive and future-looking skills landscape able to operate commercially on a global competitive stage.

The role is based at the University of South Wales’ Faculty of Business and Creative Industries’ Cardiff campus. USW provides leadership to the consortium on the skills work package element of the overall multi-stranded Media Cymru workplan. The Faculty of Business and Creative Industries (FBCI) at the University of South Wales has an active research culture with a proven track record in Screen Skills in Wales. This post represents an opportunity for the Faculty to build further its expertise in this area. FBCI is the largest HE provider of screen industries education in Wales. The Centre for the Study of Media and Culture in Small Nations | University of South Wales is a major research centre examining the creative industries through the lens of small nations globally. It produces high-quality research including journal articles, monographs, practice as research outputs such as exhibitions and films, and industry reports.

The role of Research Fellow in Screen Skills for Innovation will appeal to an experienced researcher with knowledge and understanding of the Screen Industries, defined for our purposes as animation, games, film, television, post-production, VFX, and virtual production. It will suit a candidate who enjoys establishing positive working relationships beyond Higher Education and who is confident in designing and undertaking both quantitative and qualitative research. The ability to work flexibly as part of both a multi-partner consortium and a small lead team is important, as is the ability to produce quality work to tight deadlines.

As the project moves towards completion the focus of this role will be on evaluation of training interventions and understanding their impact, working within an existing evaluation framework. As well as supporting the archiving of work undertaken during the project.

This position is 0.8 FTE fixed term until 31st December 2026.
