Role Summary

About the Role

We are seeking an Operations Manager to lead the professional services team within the Healthcare Technologies Institute (HTI), part of the School of Chemical Engineering at the University of Birmingham. This is a pivotal role, providing strategic and operational leadership to support world-class research and academic delivery in a multidisciplinary environment.

HTI is a Strategic Research Centre that brings together experts from across the University—including chemical engineering, biomedical science, computer science, and more—to accelerate the translation of scientific discoveries into healthcare applications.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the Centre’s professional services team, ensuring high-quality administrative support.
  • Support the Director and Executive Team in delivering HTI’s strategic objectives.
  • Oversee financial planning, budgeting, and resource management.
  • Drive operational excellence and continuous improvement across all administrative functions.
  • Foster collaboration with internal and external stakeholders, including NHS partners.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of change management initiatives.

Person Specification

You will bring:

  • A degree or equivalent experience, with professional training (e.g. ILM) desirable.
  • Significant experience in operations or administration within a complex organisation.
  • Strong leadership and people management skills.
  • Proven financial acumen and experience managing budgets.
  • Excellent communication, analytical, and organisational abilities.
  • A collaborative mindset and the ability to work across disciplines and functions.
