Lecturer in TESOL and Applied Linguistics (Teaching and Scholarship) - Grade 7 (0.8 FTE)

University of Liverpool - Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS), School of the Arts, Department of English

Location: Liverpool
Salary: £39,355 to £45,413 per annum
Hours: Part Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 3rd July 2025
Closes: 17th July 2025
Job Ref: 095913

The Department of English seeks to appoint a Lecturer in TESOL and Applied Linguistics who will contribute extensively to the teaching of our successful postgraduate provision. There may also be the opportunity to contribute to teaching on our undergraduate programme.

The MA in TESOL is designed to meet the needs of graduates, usually but not exclusively students of English, who are planning to become teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages. The MA in Applied Linguistics is designed for practising language teachers, teacher trainers and materials writers who want to extend the range of professional and academic skills and knowledge at their disposal. The two MAs share a number of modules and have a very strong combined intake, of whom the majority are international students.

You will be an academic with a developing national/international reputation for their scholarship, who has demonstrated excellence in teaching and supervision via a range of methods (including online/blended) to undergraduate and postgraduate students from diverse backgrounds. You must demonstrate the potential for excellence in teaching and supervision in the broad area of TESOL and Applied Linguistics. Expertise in EFL methodology and applied linguistics, and experience in TEFL/TESOL teaching and teacher development are essential. Familiarity with Second Language Acquisition teaching and research is desirable.

You should hold a PhD in TESOL, Applied Linguistics, or a related field. As this is primarily a teaching post, a current research profile is desirable, but there is no requirement to be eligible for REF. However, you will have the opportunity to contribute fully to the high-quality research profile of the Department, to the study of English/Linguistics nationally and internationally, and to the discipline’s wider relevance beyond the academy. You will have the ability to collaborate with external partners, and to work with one or more of our research centres and clusters (www.liverpool.ac.uk/english/research/clusters-centres).

This is a fixed-term post to cover a period of parental leave, start date: as soon as possible after 1st August 2025, end date: up to 20th March 2026.

This role maybe eligible for sponsorship under the Skilled Worker route, however will depend on the applicants circumstances at the time of application in line with the Skilled Worker Criteria. For any queries, please contact staffimmigration@liverpool.ac.uk quoting the Job reference number.
