Senior Research Software Engineer

Imperial College London - Department of Earth Science & Engineering

Location: London, Hybrid
Salary: £56,652 to £68,005 per annum
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 9th July 2025
Closes: 1st August 2025
Job Ref: ENG03592

Location: South Kensington, White City, Offsite

About the role:

FindHeat is large, multi-national, multi-institution research project funded by the European Union.  The aim of the project is to deliver a novel, conceptual model-based geothermal exploration workflow via a modular toolkit that will provide innovative software tools and exploration techniques at significantly lower cost than the current state-of-the-art (see https://findheat.eu/).

Imperial’s contribution to the FindHeat project will extend our Rapid Reservoir Modelling (RRM) software to geothermal applications.  RRM is an innovative, open-source software tool that implements sketch-based interface and modelling (SBIM) to create 3D models of underground reservoirs (see bitbucket.org/rapidreservoirmodelling/rrm/src/phase2/).  RRM allows rapid creation of models using a simple, intuitive interface: the user sketches in plan-view or cross-section using a stylus, finger or mouse and the tool implements rules based on geological principles to create 3D surfaces that define watertight volumes.

What you would be doing:

This Research Software Engineer position (RSE) presents an exciting opportunity to work in a stimulating, collaborative research environment, developing an innovative software tool within a large EU-funded project.  The successful applicant will implement new functionality in the RRM code, working collaboratively with researchers in NORMS and across the FindHeat consortium.  You will also maintain the existing codebase.  You will join the growing community of RSEs in the Department of Earth Science and Engineering. The department has a strong focus on computational geoscience, high-performance computing and cloud computing.

What we are looking for:

  • Postgraduate qualification or equivalent professional experience with significant exposure to developing software for research in an academic or industrial setting.
  • Experience of UI/UX design and implementation with a particular focus on SBIM.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to software development best practise including issue tracking, testing, documentation, version control, build automation and continuous integration.
  • Advanced skills in C\C++, Python, Qt, VTK and CMake.
  • Ability to make and explain significant technical decisions regarding software design and implementation

What we can offer you:

  • Access to a range of workplace benefits including a flexible working policy from day one, generous family leave packages, on-site leisure facilities and cycle-to-work scheme.
  • The opportunity to continue your career at a world-leading institution
  • Sector-leading salary and remuneration package (including 38 days off a year)
  • Be part of a diverse, inclusive and collaborative work culture with various staff networks and resources to support your personal and professional wellbeing.
