Tutor in Architectural Design:

ARCH11089 Architectural Design Studio C, Semester 1, Master of Architecture, 120 hours
ARCH11090 Architectural Design Studio D, Semester 2, Master of Architecture, 120 hours

There is a guaranteed minimum of 240 hours to be offered in the academic year 2025-26. These hours include preparation time, contact time, a small number of hours for staff meetings, and dealing with student enquiries and CPD hours, and marking/assessment hours for the number of students taught.

We are seeking to appoint a Tutor with experience in architectural design teaching within ARB Part 2 professional accredited programmes and with a portfolio of architectural research-led design practice, to fill a tutoring position in the Master of Architecture next academic year, 2025-26.

The Master of Architecture programme is delivered through a diverse set of elective design studios that engage with complex urban settings, innovative material systems, and critical forms of inquiry and representation to address the set of environmental, socio-economic, and political questions facing contemporary architectural practice. The applicant will contribute to the delivery of two semester-long design studios within the programme:

  • Architectural Design Studio C, Semester 1, focuses on the development of a productive conceptual and contextual framework for an architectural project or proposition in an international location. The studio involves a one-week field trip to a city in the Arab Maghreb where the studio will be based, when students engage in thematic research and site analysis, concluding the semester by developing an urban or architectural language informed by the conceptual, contextual, and environmental concerns identified.

  • Architectural Design Studio D, Semester 2, involves the resolution of that language and set of concerns through a complex building design project.

Applicants should be familiar with the structure and delivery of the Architectural Design Studios within the Master of Architecture at ESALA. The studios are typically of 20 students. The applicant will contribute to the delivery of the weekly architectural design tutorials, mid-term and final term reviews, written feedback at mid-term and end of semester and final assessment. The candidate will also assist the lead tutor in the organisation and support of the group during the international field trip.

Specifically, the applicant will have experience in the delivery of architectural design studios thematically engaged with post-colonial conditions and the idea of cultural crossing. Knowledge of the Arabic language is recommended, in order to assist during the preparation and delivery of the field trip.

Your skills and attributes for success:

  • An architect with experience of research-led architectural practice, engaged in developing modes of enquire through making and drawing, demonstrated through a portfolio.
  • A tutor with experience of teaching architectural design at the level of Master of Architecture, ARB Part 2 accredited programmes.
  • Ability to work within a team with a collegial attitude, respect and sensitivity toward students and other staff members.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of Arabic language to support the activity of the fieldtrip.
