Mental Health Adviser

Manchester Metropolitan University – Student Services - Counselling, Mental Health and Wellbeing Service

Manchester Metropolitan University's Counselling, Mental Health and Wellbeing Service has an exciting opportunity for a Mental Health Adviser to join our multidisciplinary team.

About us:

We are a team of professional Counsellors and Therapists, Mental Health Advisers, and Wellbeing Advisers providing individual and group-based support for students experiencing a range of moderate and complex mental health difficulties. The Service also provides consultation and training for University staff on student mental health concerns. Our aim is to provide access to timely and high quality psychological and mental health support to enhance the student experience and help students to succeed.

About the role:

Mental Health Advisers

  • Undertake mental health and risk assessments for students with serious and enduring mental health difficulties and co-ordinate effective support packages in conjunction with University, community and NHS services.
  • Deliver 1:1 and group-based sessions for students presenting with complex mental health and relational difficulties.
  • Work as part of a duty rota responding to urgent queries and students in crisis, providing advice and support to university staff, parents and other stakeholders on student mental health concerns.
  • Work in collaboration with colleagues within the Counselling, Mental Health and Wellbeing Service and other University teams and liaise with external services to ensure that students are receiving the range of support they need and risk is managed effectively.
  • Offer consultation and training to University staff on responding to students with mental health and wellbeing issues.

About you:

  • Self-motivated and work well as part of a team with the ability to develop effective working relationships with colleagues within the Service, across the University and external services.
  • Strong relational skills, able to build rapport with students presenting with a range of complex and enduring mental health difficulties, including substance use issues, and respond to risk issues effectively whilst maintaining appropriate boundaries.
  • Able to maintain a calm attitude when responding to challenging and stressful situations.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Qualification in a profession relevant to the post (such as mental health nurse, mental health social worker).
  • Substantial post-qualification experience of working in one or more relevant settings e.g. community mental health team or similar team; mental health liaison service to A&E; substance use services; early intervention in psychosis team; home based treatment team.
