This is an exciting opportunity to join the Technical Team within the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. The main purpose of the role is to provide specialist technical electrical and mechanical services to academic/research staff and students to support research and teaching projects.

You will be required to apply electrical and/or instrumentation skills, design, modify, manufacture and install control circuits according to specifications for teaching and research related purposes ensuring professional quality and best practice. You will also be required to maintain, modify, and repair technical equipment/apparatus, including workshop equipment, to ensure it is safe to use and complies with the relevant statutory safety regulations. Overall, you will be part of an extensive technical team across the School and will work alongside other technicians in other areas, building up a diverse knowledge of the technical support needed to successfully support staff and students through their education and research work.

Please note that the salary range for this post will increase to £29,594 - £32,186 from 1 August 2025.

About the person:

You must have:

  • Academic and/or vocational qualifications i.e. OND/ONC and/or NVQ level 3 in relevant subject (or equivalent standard) in an electrical engineering discipline and/or a recognised, apprenticeship completed in an electrical engineering environment.
  • A minimum of two years relevant work experience to include experience with control systems or instrumentation equipment.
  • Good mechanical assembly skills and experience of using some workshop machinery e.g. pillar drills, bandsaws etc.
  • Demonstrable understanding of machinery safety circuits and standards.
  • Well-developed understanding of relevant regulations and procedures including health and safety requirements.

As a skilled technician you will also have:

  • Ability to follow technical diagrams and instructions.
  • Competence in the use of Information Technology and relevant software packages including MS Office.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Willingness to work as part of a team as well as on own initiative.
  • Ability to prioritise own work to meet deadlines.
  • Willingness to gain experience and learn new skills and techniques.
