About the role
Tyrosine fusion kinases resulting from chromosomal translocations, are found in haematological malignancies and solid tumours, driving uncontrolled growth of cancer cells. They subsequently serve as biomarkers and therapeutic targets for these cancers. You will join an MRC-funded project, to further understand mechanisms underlying the activation of cancer signalling pathways by tyrosine fusion kinases in Leukaemia, and their regulation by the HSP90 molecular chaperone system. You will test novel approaches to disrupt fusion kinase function, with the aim of identifying new therapeutic targets.
Based in the School of Life Sciences, the Genome Damage and Stability Centre, a university Centre of Excellence, is an internationally renowned Institute carrying out research on the response of cells to DNA damage, genome instability and its relationship to disease. We provide a stimulating and supportive environment with a vibrant network of cancer researchers. Our expertise covers a range of experimental systems with access to state-of-the art facilities. There will also be opportunities to undertake technical and career development skills training.
About you
This project is suitable for a candidate who has completed, or is near to completing a PhD in biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology or related areas and has experience of working in the cancer signalling or molecular chaperone fields. You will have expertise in mammalian cell culture (cell lines and primary cells) and cell-based assays. Additional experience of large-scale protein production for biochemical and structural studies would be advantageous.
You will have a strong track record of high-quality, peer-reviewed research and will demonstrate excellent written and oral communication skills. You will work independently and collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary research team and wider network of academic and clinical collaborators, actively participating in scientific discussions, conferences and publications. The successful candidate will bring the enthusiasm, initiative, and organisational skills needed to drive the project forward, while contributing to a supportive, inclusive research environment.
