Salary from £36,008 to £40,991 pa inclusive with potential to progress to £43,854 pa inclusive of London allowance

This post is full-time, hybrid and fixed term for 12 months

The Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment (GRI), based at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), is seeking a full-time Research Assistant (“pre-doc”) to work closely with Dr. Misato Sato and Dr. Aurélien Saussay on several research projects at the intersection of environmental economics and labour economics. The successful candidate will play an integral role in launching and running the new LSE Green Skills Lab at the Grantham Research Institute, supporting data-driven, policy-relevant research examining the intersection of environmental challenges and the just transition. This role is ideal for candidates planning to apply to top PhD programmes and looking for hands-on research experience on high-impact questions in environmental economics and labour economics.

Key responsibilities for this role includes:

• Data collection, cleaning, and merging from very large-scale microdata sources (e.g., terabyte-scale job ads datasets, spatial datasets, patents).
• Conduct data analysis using econometric and statistical tools. Excellent knowledge of R is expected. Good knowledge of Python, experience with modern LLM APIs (e.g. openai-python or google-genai) would be a definite plus.
• Assist in literature reviews and summarising academic research.
• Contribute to writing research papers and policy reports.
• Participate in meetings with collaborators and present research findings when appropriate.
• Identify and source new datasets relevant to ongoing projects.
• Support administrative and organisational aspects of the LSE Green Skills Lab, including events organisation, as needed.

Candidates should have:

• Undergraduate or Master’s degree (by post start date) in Economics or another quantitative discipline
• Strong academic performance in undergraduate and, where applicable, Master’s coursework
• Advanced programming skills in R and Python
• Familiarity with econometric techniques, especially panel data methods
• Ability to perform data work with high accuracy and attention to detail
