Role Summary

The Department of Dentistry is looking to appoint Clinical Dental Tutor(s) to work under the direction of the lead for Periodontology Undergraduate Teaching and the Head of Department. To undertake clinical teaching and/or laboratory based simulation teaching and associated administrative duties including progress monitoring, report writing and feeding into the Department’s reporting processes. The demonstration of initiative in contributing actively to the continued development and improvement of the teaching programme is welcomed and expected.

To take responsibility for the safety and wellbeing of patients under student care. To ensure that patient treatment by students is carried out with minimal trauma, and discomfort, ensuring infection prevention and control measures are followed and not involving any danger to patient health. The care of patients takes precedence over academic concerns.

Clinical teaching sessions run through the day (08:30-12:30 morning and 13:00-17:00 afternoon). The post holder will be required to work through the day or on a sessional basis, which will be agreed at the time of appointment. The post offered will either be substantive or on a fixed term basis in the first instance. Please indicate in your application your preferred working sessions and preference for a substantive or fixed term contract. Flexibility in delivery of sessions would be desirable.

Main Duties

Teaching

  • Clinical supervision of Periodontology Specialty Teaching areas including in clinical and simulation environments.
  • Simulation teaching utilising phantom heads in both the laboratory and clinical environments. 
  • To monitor student progress with clinical procedures and to intervene when appropriate.
  • Participation in tutorials and lecture programme which may include development of new teaching materials as appropriate.
  • Preparation of the required teaching material and conforming to relevant teaching policies, including those published by Specialty Teaching areas. To clarify these policies where necessary through discussion with the area concerned.

Continuous Assessment / Feedback

  • Maintain a professional record of student achievement on a sessional basis including timely provision of recorded feedback to the student. 
  • To provide input (report writing) to termly Continuous Assessment reports, collated by the lead for Periodontology Undergraduate Teaching.

Clinical Organisation

  • To conform to the clinical policies, guidelines, and standard operating procedures of Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust (BCHCfT) and the Department of Dentistry.
  • To support the lead for Periodontology Undergraduate Teaching in the safe and efficient running of the clinic.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications, Experience

  • Full registration with the UK General Dental Council (GDC).
  • Good Team Worker.
  • Good IT skills and familiarity with electronic clinical records and systems.
  • Meets the requirements for Occupational Health Clearance and enhanced DBS screening.
  • Preferably have been involved in foundation training and have some teaching experience.
