The Department of Statistics and St Anne’s College intend to appoint to the Professorship of Statistical Science as soon as possible.

The Professorship of Statistical Science is at the heart of the University of Oxford’s continuing tradition of excellence in the subject. The Professor will be expected to provide outstanding research leadership in statistical methods development, bringing with them a vision for the discipline within the University of Oxford and internationally. They will help shape and develop the department’s research and overall strategy, and will lead, and help to grow, a group of researchers within the department conducting research in the broad area of Statistical Methodology. The Professor will also be expected to teach and supervise at undergraduate and graduate level, not exclusively in their area of research expertise.

You should be a world-leading academic in Statistics (in particular the development of novel methodological approaches) with a demonstrable track record of attracting substantial research funding. We would especially like to hear from candidates whose methodological work complements, or links with, some of the existing applied research strands within the department. You should have experience in an academic leadership role with the ability to lead and inspire academic colleagues. You will have a successful record of teaching and supervision and the ability to foster a high level of achievement in students.

If you would like to discuss this post, please contact Professor Christl Donnelly, Head of Department, at christl.donnelly@stats.ox.ac.uk or Professor Frank Windmeijer, Deputy Head of Department, at frank.windmeijer@stats.ox.ac.uk. All enquiries will be treated in strict confidence and will not form part of the selection decision.

The closing date for applications is 12:00 noon UK time on Monday 15 September 2025. Interviews are expected to be held in November 2025.

Recruitment for this position is being held concurrently with the Professorships of Statistics in association with Jesus College (vacancy ID 179507), also in the Department of Statistics. Applications for the two posts will be considered by a joint electoral board with representatives from both colleges. You are welcome to apply for both posts – please submit a separate application for each via the recruitment system if you wish to do so.
