About us
The Department of War Studies is a large and diverse department, with expertise in areas including, but not limited to, conflict resolution, contemporary and historical warfare, foreign policy, gender, international relations, migration and borders, security studies, strategic studies, technology and violence. We are a theoretically and methodologically plural research and teaching community.
The Department of War Studies is located in the Faculty of Social Science and Public Policy, the Department is part of the KCL School of Security Studies – one of the largest global communities of scholars dedicated to producing world-leading research across all areas of security, defence and international relations.
The Department, School, Faculty, and University are committed to embedding good diversity and inclusion practice into all of our activities. We are committed to encourage further growth from diverse groups, and we look forward to welcoming applicants of all abilities and backgrounds, whom we are able to support with our flexible varied working practices. However, given that female and Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) candidates are currently under-represented, we would welcome applications from BME and female applicants. Overall, King’s values the diversity of its staff and student body and recognises that this is both a strength and a defining feature of King’s as a London university in a global context.
About the role
The Department of War Studies seeks to appoint a Lecturer in Foreign Policy to contribute to the Department’s teaching and research capacity. We welcome applications from candidates whose research and teaching will contribute to and expand our coverage of theories and models of foreign policy decision-making and contemporary foreign policy issues. The Department has considerable expertise in the Middle East and East Asia, and we are seeking applications from candidates with other regional (particularly cross-regional) or thematic research and teaching profiles.
The successful candidate will have an emerging track record of high-quality publications and a clear research agenda in the area of Foreign Policy. They will further maintain research activities and connections through a portfolio of individual and/or joint research projects and will work to secure external research funding. We offer mentorship in support of these activities. The role holder, upon completion of their probation, will be expected to supervise PhD students.
The successful candidate will also be responsible for delivering high-quality, innovative undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. They will teach on foreign policy issues but will also be well equipped to contribute to teaching in other areas of International Relations. Teaching will include both compulsory and optional modules at BA and MA levels. They will work with students from a wide range of backgrounds and will be responsible for contributing to student success. The successful candidate will also play a role in the institutional and intellectual development of the Department and undertake Departmental, School, Faculty and University administrative duties as required.
NB: The list of essential and desirable criteria will be used for short-listing, so please provide supporting evidence for each criterion in your application materials.
Appointments can only be made at Lecturer level. It will not be possible to make appointments at more senior grades, or to exceed the salary advertised.
This is a full-time post (35 hours per week), and you will be offered an indefinite contract.
