About the Role
To work as part of a team of technical staff to support a large volume of varied activity within the School of Engineering & Materials Science (SEMS), supporting research and teaching programmes. The role involves manufacturing high precision components in a variety of materials to high accuracy. The post holder will be seasoned in the use of both conventional and CNC machinery to a high standard, ideally with experience of TIG, MIG and oxyacetylene welding techniques. The post holder will play a key role in the design, fabrication and modification of components, providing expert advice for students and staff in research, taught programs and 'hands on' workshop courses. The role holder may be called upon to supervise junior colleagues and apprentices. The ideal candidate will be expected to work as part of a team, being mutually supportive and covering duties as necessary and where appropriate during other team members' absences and at times of additional pressure, as directed.
About You
The applicant should have a BTEC, HNC/D in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent or several years indentured apprenticeship or equivalent. The applicant should have good IT skills including the office suite of programs and experience of CAD and CAM software.
About the Department
This post is within the School of Engineering and Materials Science, a large School with 70-80 academics and a similar number of postdoctoral research staff. There are around 1000 undergraduate and taught postgraduate students and 220 PhD students. These are supported by an administrative and technical staff team of 45. The staff and student body are international in make-up.
