Location: Cambridge
Salary: £41,509 per annum
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract

Applications are invited from suitably qualified applicants for a College Lectureship in British History (1500-1900), associated with a Fellowship of Christ’s College.

The Lectureship will be tenable from 1 September 2026 to 31 August 2029 initially, or for a similar period with dates to be agreed. The Lectureship is a renewable (permanent) post. The postholder will have their first formal appraisal during their third year, potentially resulting in renewal for a further two years. The postholder will have their second formal appraisal at the start of the fifth year, which is the final year of the probationary period. Successful second appraisal will result in completion of the probationary period and renewal until the retirement age.

The successful candidate will be expected to undertake at least eight hours of small-group teaching per week for the College during Full Term (equivalent to 160 hours per academic year); to engage in research and publication; to act as Director of Studies in History for one or more parts of Tripos; and to undertake other College offices or duties appropriate to the appointment if asked to do so. Candidates will be expected to be able to teach one or more outline papers in Part IA as well as one or more topics papers in Part IB, and will take a leading role in organising and delivering the college’s Historical Thinking strand. The Fellow may, at their discretion, give additional College teaching (beyond 160 hours per annum) which would be remunerated at the normal hourly rates for College supervision; lecturing for the History Faculty is welcomed as well. The successful candidate may specialise in the earlier or the later part of the period, and should have an excellent publication record and plans for future research.

The stipend will be equivalent to point 44 of the Cambridge University scale (presently £41,509 per annum). The Fellow will be a member of the College’s Governing Body and will be expected to sit on a number of College committees. The privileges of a Fellowship include seven free meals per week, the possibility of limited financial support for research expenses, a study room for teaching and other academic purposes, and possibly single-occupancy residential accommodation in College if required. The stipend is subject to a reduction if the Fellow chooses to reside in College.
