Engagement Officer

The University of Edinburgh - The Roslin Institute

Location: Edinburgh
Salary: £34,610 to £39,906 per annum,
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 7th August 2025
Closes: 25th August 2025
Job Ref: 12905

Full time: 35 hours per week

Fixed term: 48 months, or not beyond 30/10/2029

The Opportunity:

We are looking for an experienced science engagement / science learning practitioner to join the Roslin Institute’s Public Engagement team to support the delivery of our award-winning Public Engagement with Research (PER) programme.

Roslin’s PER programme aims to demonstrate that “Science is for Everyone” and prioritises engagement with under-served audiences, including communities in areas of socio-economic deprivation and/or rural isolation. It includes in-person and online research-linked activities for primary, secondary and international schools, FE colleges, adult learners and teachers, as well as events for the general public; and is delivered with support from University of Edinburgh scientific and research staff, and postgraduate students.

The role is based at the Roslin Institute at the University of Edinburgh’s Easter Bush Campus, and our PER programme is delivered on campus at the Easter Bush Science Outreach Centre (EBSOC), a laboratory space purpose-built for public engagement, and in locations across Scotland via our “Roslin on the Road” rural outreach programme, which has recently extended from its initial Highland locations to include aquaculture-themed outreach in north-west Scotland, Orkney and Shetland.

The post is full-time (35 hours per week) and fixed-term for four years. We are open to considering flexible working patterns, but please note that PER activities need to be delivered at the best times for our audiences, and the Roslin Institute PER programme runs year-round. All members of the PER team need to work flexibly on occasion, and the post will involve some work in the evenings, at weekends and during school holidays, as well as supporting outreach projects that require multiple-night stays away from our Edinburgh base.

Your skills and attributes for success:

  • Experience of leading the delivery of public engagement with science and/or science learning activities
  • Practical laboratory skills and technical knowledge relevant to the Roslin Institute PER programme
  • Excellent all-round communication skills
  • Enthusiasm for public engagement with research and interest in Roslin Institute research
  • Ability to develop and maintain good working relationships with colleagues and key stakeholders
