We are launching an ambitious new Centre for Digital Data Research to harness the power of digital data in driving world-class, socially responsible research. This cross-disciplinary centre will combine academic and technical expertise with advanced computing capabilities to enable research at scale - from the processing of large, complex data sets to the training and deployment of cutting-edge AI models. 

To support this exciting new centre, we are seeking a Research Statistician to play a critical role in data analysis and validation using appropriate methodologies. You will work closely with researchers, fellow team members within Technical Services and our colleagues in Information Technology & Digital to ensure key research projects have support in data analysis. Your expertise will help underpin the University's ambition to become a leader in digital and data-driven research.  

Appointment Details 

We are offering this appointment as one of two roles: 

  • Technical Specialist (Research Statistics): Grade 7 £35,116 to £39,355 
  • Research Technical Professional (Research Statistics): Grade 8 £40,497 to £46,735 

You will: 

  • Lead the design, development, and optimisation of methodologies for identifying patterns, interpreting data, and formulating solutions to research questions. 
  • Work collaboratively with academic researchers, software engineer, Technical Services and IT colleagues to aid statistical analysis of large datasets to facilitate impactful research. 
  • Ensure the data ethics and privacy regulations for responsible data handling and research. Be responsible for data cleaning, handling missing values, and transforming data for analysis. 
  • Champion best practices in data governance & security, 
  • Contribute to the strategic planning, ensuring alignment with the University's digital research ambitions. 
  • Be familiar with Linux Operating Systems. 

You will bring: 

  • Proven experience in designing and statistical data analysis and visualisation. 
  • A strong understanding of modern statistical methodologies and experimental design and power analysis. 
  • Skilled in required programming languages such as R and Python. 
  • A commitment to best practices in data security, governance, and analysis of large data sets. 
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to engage effectively with technical colleagues, researchers, and wider stakeholders to understand requirements and deliver impactful solutions.

Once on the pathway individuals can apply for promotion when they can evidence set criteria. Applicants who can't currently evidence the criteria can apply for the Technical Specialist role. We are committed to developing all our staff.  Once in post, Technical Specialists wishing to transfer onto the RTP promotion pathway can work with their line manager to develop the required evidence.
