About the role

The services that GeMS currently compromises are: molecular biology, micromanipulation, surgical expertise, cryopreservation of rodent and aquatics germplasms, assisted Reproductive techniques such as IVF, AI, ICSI, Rederivation of live and frozen imports & exports to and from the Crick, and murine stem cell culture. 

As the GeMS Senior Research Scientist (SRS), you will play a pivotal role in developing new animal models and leading projects from start to finish. An in-depth understanding of molecular biology, cell culture, genetic modification, and mouse genetics is required. You will also ensure that the 3Rs principles for in vivo research -replacement, reduction, and refinement, underpin all work undertaken. 

What you will be doing 

As a Senior Research Scientist at the Crick, you will:   

  • Design and plan complex cloning strategies, genotyping strategies and the generation of molecular reagents, for the production and validation of new genetically modified alleles, predominantly using CRISPR-based genetic manipulation.
  • Use, implement, support and troubleshoot the execution of core molecular biology and cell culture techniques and implement novel methodologies within the group to improve production efficiency and accuracy.
  • Support the Senior Manager in the design and implementation for the creation of new animal models.
  • Plan and co-ordinate the in vivo gene delivery pipeline, for the direct manipulation of the mouse zygote, and the gene targeting pipeline for manipulation of mouse embryonic stem cells.
  • Trouble shoot problematic experiments across the GeMS portfolio.

About you 

You will bring 

  • PhD or MSc/BSc with a proven track record and significant experience in a relevant field.
  • Possess considerable relevant experience with a track record of achievement and demonstrable skill in genome engineering, molecular biology and mammalian cell culture.
  • Exhibit knowledge, understanding and practical experience of CRISPR/CAS design and associated techniques.
  • Experienced in the use genome browsers, DNA analysis software and CRISPR Cas guide on/off target specificity software.
  • Commitment to continued professional development (CPD).
