About the role

We have an exciting opportunity to join the Oxford Vaccine Group in the Department of Paediatrics as our Laboratory Research Assistant.

The role is essential to deliverance of research projects on human immunity against bacterial and viral infections using human challenge models. You will support the research of Post-Doctoral Scientists, whilst obtaining training in working to Good Clinical and Laboratory Practice standards, HTA guidelines and MHRA regulations.

You will use a large variety of techniques from classical and molecular microbiology and handling and analysis of blood and mucosal samples from clinical studies. Training will be provided but previous experience in microbiology is expected. You will also participate in developing and establishing methodologies that will be used in human challenge studies.

You will be working in a growing department within the Medical Sciences Division. The Department of Paediatrics is a world leader in child health research and hosts internationally renowned research programmes in drug development, gastroenterology, haematology, HIV, immunology, neuroimaging, neuromuscular diseases and vaccinology. Our research group under the lead of Prof Daniela Ferreira conducts research using controlled human challenge models to better understand mucosal immunity to respiratory pathogens and inform vaccine development.

This position is offered full-time on a fixed-term contract initially for one year or until 18 October 2026 (whichever is earliest) with the possibility to extend provided further external funding is available.

About you

You will hold a BSc or MSc in biological science, supplemented by relevant post-qualification experience in clinical research under GCP guidelines, with proven and demonstrable microbiology and/or immunology skills and have experience handling and analysing clinical samples. The ideal candidate would be able to work autonomously as well as part of a team, be proactive, participate in meetings and have excellent communication and organisational skills and attention to detail. Applicants should have a keen interest in research and be dedicated to the team’s output.
