About the role

The Joshi laboratory at Peninsula Dental School (one of England's top Dental Schools) is seeking a highly motivated Research Assistant in Microbiology to investigate mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance and genetic evolution in anaerobic pathogens, with a focus on Clostridioides difficile.

You will be involved in ongoing and planned research aiming to elucidate the mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance in anaerobic pathogens. It is expected that you will be a self-starter, with a strong academic and research background in the following areas: anaerobic microbiology (particularly Clostridioides difficile), molecular biology and demonstrable hands-on experience in laboratory microbiology. Applications are invited from individuals with combined expertise in anaerobic microbiology and molecular microbiology, with a strongly demonstrated commitment to research.

This is a full-time position working 37 hours per week on a fixed-term basis for 6 months due to funding.  You will be based at the Derriford Research Facility, Plymouth Science Park, University of Plymouth North Campus.

What we’re looking for

You must have a BSc/MSc qualification in a relevant subject area. Relevant hands-on laboratory research experience and knowledge in anaerobic and molecular microbiology is essential. Knowledge of antimicrobial resistance and the oral resistome would be an advantage. Applicants are expected to have excellent communication and scientific report writing skills.

You should be able to work both independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary, interprofessional team environment. The candidate must demonstrate professionalism, including reliability, integrity, and the ability to maintain high standards of conduct, confidentiality, and ethical practice in an academic research environment.
