The School of Mathematics at the University of Birmingham is one of the largest communities of mathematical scientists in the UK. With over a century of research and teaching, it has a proud legacy, global reach and an ambitious outlook. As a vibrant international centre for excellent research, the School delivers impactful work that benefits scientific advancement and technological innovation for individuals and societies. Its outstanding educational offering inspires students and drives academic excellence across three campuses in Edgbaston, China and Dubai.

One of seven Schools within the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences, the School comprises a growing community of around 78 academic staff, alongside research fellows and professional services support, and ~1900 students.

The School has an interdisciplinary ethos and extensive national and international collaborations with high-performing research partners and key stakeholders, cultivating research and education pipelines that lead to meaningful improvements to national and international policy and practice. 

The next Head of the School of Mathematics will lead the School forward as it grows its community, reputation and impact, formulating and realising a vision for the School’s continued excellence in education, research in line with the Birmingham 2030 Strategy.

As a member of the Board of the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences, the Head of School will report to the Pro Vice-Chancellor of the College and is responsible for the delivery of the academic, financial and people management of the School as well as leading the School’s Senior Management Team.  

The Head of School will have proven leadership and management credentials with an inclusive, collaborative approach, academic credibility among peers, and able to build positive relationships internally and externally.
