Birkbeck, University of London, has an excellent opportunity for a Demonstrator to join the teaching team on our BSc and MSc Psychology programmes, and support the School of Psychological Sciences in 2026.

As Demonstrator you will teach the psychology programme modules:

1) Introduction to Research Methods:

  • Level 4; Wednesdays 6-9pm, from 14 January to 8 July 2026 (excluding 18 February, 3 June due to reading week, and one other week TBD).
  • Duties include assisting students as they work through pre-prepared pen and paper/computer based introductory research methods exercises including tasks about descriptive statistics, simple inferential statistical tests (t-test, chi-square, one-way Anova), parts of a lab report, writing a pre-registration. Marking of lab reports will also be required for an additional payment.

2) Research Methods 1

  • Level 5; Mondays 2-5pm, from 12 January to 23 March 2026 (excluding 16 February due to reading week).
  • Marking for assessments will be required, and you will be paid separately for this.

3) Research Skills in Psychology

  • Level 7; Fridays 6-9pm, from 16 January to 27 March 2026 (excluding 20 February due to reading week and another two weeks (TBD)).
  • Duties include assisting in the supervision of group projects. Marking for assessments will be required, and you will be paid separately. Previous experience of working as a Demonstrator, supporting research methods courses would be beneficial for this module.

You will assist in the delivery of predetermined programmes of teaching to Birkbeck Psychological Science students, under academic supervision, to facilitate the successful completion of their studies. You should engage in the scholarship necessary to ensure good practice in teaching and to apply appropriate levels of knowledge in the subject areas to be taught.

Most individuals undertaking these roles will be employed as part of their general academic development to obtain practical teaching experience and will be undertaking this work independently but in parallel with postgraduate studies.

Further to the person specification, additional essential requirements for this role are:

  • A first degree in Psychology or an equivalent relevant qualification.
  • Advanced experience in using a range of statistical techniques and report writing suitable for quantitative psychological science research.
  • Confident presentation skills and ability to clearly and effectively pass on specialist subject area knowledge.
  • A good working knowledge of SPSS.
  • Experience of marking coursework and/or exams.

Candidates will need to demonstrate competence or significant potential in all the above areas.

Salary:
Payment is based on an hourly rate depending on length of continuous service with the College (starting rate £24.55 per hour inclusive of pro-rata London allowance and holiday pay) for contact hours worked. This hourly rate is based on the starting point of Grade 6, which covers preparation, teaching, administration, and other examining duties in connection with the course.
