The Opportunity

At Monash University, we believe in the power of ideas to change the world. We’re looking for a visionary academic leader to join us as Professor and Head of our Department of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (DSAI). This is more than a leadership role, it’s a chance to help shape the future of research, education, and impact in one of the most dynamic fields of our time.

Our Faculty of Information Technology is globally recognised (ranked #40 in Data Science & AI, QS 2025 and #61 in Computer Science, Times Higher Education 2025), with our DSAI department leading transformative work in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data science, work that’s improving lives, informing policy, and driving industry forward.

We’re proud of our inclusive culture, and we actively support gender equity and diversity through initiatives like the Athena SWAN Charter and the STEMM Women Academic Network. We know that diverse teams create better outcomes, and we’re committed to fostering an environment where everyone can thrive.

As Professor and Head of Department, you’ll play a central role in guiding the strategic direction of DSAI. You’ll lead a talented and passionate team, support emerging researchers, and help shape the curriculum that prepares our students to become global leaders in technology.

You’ll also have the opportunity to pursue your own research interests, collaborate across disciplines, and build partnerships with industry, government, and international institutions.

This role offers the scope to make a lasting impact on your field, your colleagues, and the broader community.

Please note: this is a continuing professorial appointment, with the Head of Department role offered for an initial 4-year term (renewable) and a Head of Department academic salary loading will be offered to the successful candidate.

About you

We’re seeking someone with a strong academic track record in AI, machine learning, or data science, and a collaborative, inclusive leadership style. You’ll bring vision, energy, and a commitment to mentoring and supporting others. You’ll be someone who sees the big picture and is excited by the opportunity to build something meaningful.

If you’re passionate about research, education, and making a difference - and if you’re ready to lead with purpose - we’d love to hear from you.
