This is an exciting opportunity to join our technical management team. The position occupies a pivotal role in both strategic development and operational delivery within Central Saint Martins (CSM) and the wider University of the Arts London (UAL). This multifaceted role encompasses two principal areas of responsibility:
1. Technical Management
As a core member of the M School, you would serve as the principal technical representative, ensuring that technical resources—including equipment, facilities, and specialist staff—are effectively aligned with the school’s strategic objectives. This includes not only the day-to-day operational oversight of technical provisions but also active participation in long-term planning to support the evolving pedagogical and infrastructural needs of the newly established M School. The role is integral to fostering a technically robust and future-facing learning environment that supports interdisciplinary creative practice.
2. Sustainable Practices
In addition to operational duties, the postholder is charged with providing institutional leadership on the integration of sustainable and regenerative methodologies within CSM technical resources. This includes the development and implementation of comprehensive strategies and policies designed to enhance the user experience of technical spaces while simultaneously aligning with UAL’s broader institutional objectives—most notably, its commitment to achieving carbon neutrality and progressing toward a net-zero campus. The role necessitates an ability to translate sustainability principles into actionable frameworks that inform resource management, facility design, and technical workflows.
About You
Strong technical operational delivery is crucial. However, what truly distinguishes candidates is their ability to collaborate effectively with others and balance the requirements of academic programmes with available technical resources, ensuring the optimal student experience.
A robust technical background is essential, as is experience in managing shared technical resources and overseeing technical staff.
Your role will encompass communicating with stakeholders, serving as a primary point of contact for technical resources, and ensuring that students, academics, fellow technicians, and other university staff have access to up-to-date and accurate information.
We are committed to attracting a diverse applicant pool and welcome individuals from all backgrounds, including those who may feel underrepresented in the workforce. We acknowledge that certain underrepresented groups may be less inclined to apply unless they are certain of meeting all the criteria. Therefore, we encourage you to reflect on your strengths and relevant experience broadly, including transferable skills where applicable. In all cases, we will select the most suitable candidate for the role.
