The School of Geography and the Environment and Linacre College intend to appoint to the Professorship of Environmental Geography with effect from September 2026. The post will be held in conjunction with a Professorial Fellowship at Linacre College.
The Professorship relates to the social science side of the discipline and requires candidates to demonstrate the research excellence, experience and skills to strengthen and extend the School’s current portfolio in environmental and human geography. The successful candidate will have a world-leading record of leadership in research, publication, interdisciplinary research collaboration, and a proven ability to raise substantial funding for research. We are looking for a candidate with the ability to lead major new interdisciplinary research initiatives and with a cutting-edge profile in one or more of the following areas of environmental geography: critical theoretical approaches to understanding human-environment relations; the socio-political dimensions of global environmental issues; developing and applying novel methodologies for researching environmental governance and policy development.
You will be an inspirational colleague, offering strategic leadership, guidance and structure for environmental social scientists in the School. You will be willing and able to advocate for environmental geography within the School, the University and externally. You will be expected to support teaching in environmental geography across the School’s undergraduate and graduate programmes, and to be willing to take on academic administrative roles in the School, including acting as Head of School as necessary.
The School of Geography and the Environment and Linacre College embrace diversity and inclusion in their recruitment campaigns and would welcome applications from candidates currently underrepresented in senior roles in the University, particularly women, candidates of colour and disabled candidates with diverse backgrounds.
The closing date for applications is 12:00 noon (UK time) on Monday 13 October 2025.
Please note that interviews will be held on Thursday 27 and Friday 28 November.
If you would like to discuss this post, please contact Ms Alexandra Norrish (alexandra.norrish@ouce.ox.ac.uk) to arrange a discussion with Professor Giles Wiggs (Head of School), Professor Dame Sarah Whatmore, or Professor Beth Greenhough. All enquiries will be treated in strict confidence and will not form part of the selection decision.
