Faculty of Science & Engineering

Operations Administrator (Permanent & Maternity Cover)

We are delighted to be recruiting two Operations Administrators to join the Faculty of Science & Engineering at Queen Mary University of London – one on a permanent basis and one to provide maternity cover until July 2026.

About Queen Mary

Queen Mary University of London is one of the UK’s leading research-intensive universities, ranked joint 7th in the UK for research quality (REF 2021). Our Faculty of Science & Engineering is a vibrant, growing community of over 14,000 students and 1,500 staff, generating cutting-edge research and delivering world-class education. With strong partnerships, cross-disciplinary collaborations, and a commitment to public engagement, we combine excellence with real-world impact.

About The Role

As an Operations Administrator, you will play a key role in ensuring the smooth running of our Schools within the Faculty. You will provide efficient and reliable administrative support across a range of finance, HR, and general operations tasks, working closely with the Operations Officer and colleagues across the University.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Managing day-to-day finance processes, including purchase orders, expenses, and record-keeping.
  • Supporting the employee lifecycle, including recruitment, onboarding, and staff record management.
  • Acting as a first point of contact for routine finance and HR queries.
  • Assisting with the preparation of reports, maintaining systems, and ensuring compliance with University procedures.
  • Providing general administrative support to meet the needs of the Schools and Faculty.

This is an excellent opportunity for a detail-oriented and proactive administrator who enjoys working in a busy, supportive environment.

About You

We are looking for candidates who can demonstrate:

  • Strong administrative experience in a medium to large organisation.
  • Excellent organisational and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritise and meet deadlines.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with colleagues at all levels.
  • Proficiency in standard IT packages (e.g. Microsoft Office), with the ability to learn University systems (e.g. Agresso and Oleeo).
  • A flexible, problem-solving approach and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

Experience in finance and/or HR administration is desirable but not essential – training will be provided.

Benefits

We offer competitive salaries, access to a generous pension scheme, 30 days’ leave per annum, a season ticket loan scheme and access to a comprehensive range of personal and professional development opportunities. In addition, we offer a range of work life balance and family friendly, inclusive employment policies, campus facilities and flexible working arrangements.

The posts are based at the Mile End Campus in London, are full-time, with a starting salary of Grade 3, in the range of £33,263 - £40,015 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance.

We welcome applications for both posts – please indicate in your application whether you are interested in the permanent role, the fixed-term maternity cover, or both.

Informal enquiries should be addressed to Julie Macdonald at j.macdonald@qmul.ac.uk

The closing date for applications is midnight on Sunday 21 September 2025.

Interviews are expected to be held on 29 September 2025 or shortly thereafter.
