The School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering (CSEE)
The School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering (CSEE) is a large and dynamic department in the Faculty of Science and Health. The School is internationally recognised for its research in robotics, communications, artificial intelligence and related fields, and offers its students an excellent education. We have enjoyed a period of rapid growth, and we are now seeking two highly motivated individuals to join our dedicated technical team in the newly created role of Senior Technician (Grade 6).
Duties of the role
As part of the core technical team, you will contribute to the smooth running of the School’s teaching, research, and operational activities. This includes supporting undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, student projects, research projects, teaching and research equipment, infrastructure upkeep, health and safety compliance, and equipment maintenance. A key part of the role is to provide technical support to research groups, some of which are expanding rapidly and require dedicated points of contact.
Postholders will provide research support across a wide range of academic groups within the School, contributing to both established and emerging areas of research. The role is designed to be adaptable to the evolving priorities of the School’s research landscape and will play a key part in supporting the growth and diversification of the School’s research portfolio. This includes offering flexible technical support that aligns with ongoing projects, interdisciplinary collaborations, and strategic research initiatives across the School.
Although the role is primarily focused on operational support, it will encompass a wide range of responsibilities essential to the smooth running of the School’s teaching and research activities. These include deploying equipment, supervising safe use of facilities, and providing day-to-day assistance to students and researchers. The postholder will also set up and demonstrate practical experiments, support the integration and optimisation of laboratory systems, and oversee the safe and effective use of equipment. In addition, the role will involve offering technical guidance on advanced tools and processes, contributing to health and safety compliance, and supporting both teaching and research projects across the School.
Skills and qualifications
Applicants must possess sound and adaptable technical knowledge relevant to the support of research groups and infrastructure within the School. This includes the ability to engage with evolving technologies and support a wide range of technical requirements across diverse teaching and research environments. This should include the ability to program in one or more languages, such as Python or C++, and detailed knowledge of technical areas related to the role. Candidates should be able to demonstrate complex specialist tasks and procedures to students with varying levels of competency and background.
You should also have excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively with students and staff, offering empathy and understanding towards individuals with mixed abilities. Flexibility, reliability, and the ability to manage evolving priorities will be essential.
