Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Biomedical Ethics

National University of Singapore – Centre for Biomedical Ethics

The Centre for Biomedical Ethics (CBmE) was established in September 2006 in the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine through a generous gift by the Chen Su Lan Trust. Under the leadership of Prof Julian Savulescu, CBmE is a thriving and internationally-regarded centre for education and research relating to the ethical aspects of healthcare and biomedical sciences.

CBmE leads the Health ethics, Law and Professionalism (HeLP) programme, a longitudinal curriculum integrated across all five years of the undergraduate medical degree. We are also pioneering a new interprofessional approach to education in ethics, law and professionalism, delivering foundational learning to all medical, nursing, pharmacy and dental students as part of the recently introduced NUS Common Curriculum for Health Professional Education. HeLP aims to equip future doctors with the ethical reasoning, legal awareness, and professional values essential for clinical practice in Singapore and globally: https://medicine.nus.edu.sg/cbme/education/undergraduatecurriculum/

We are seeking a talented and collegial educator with expertise in healthcare ethics, law and professionalism to contribute to our teaching mission. The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to excellence in education, and will play a key role in the ongoing development and delivery of the HeLP programme, working in a senior position within a team of more than 25 educators.

This is an appointment on the Educator Track. It will be a fixed-term, full-time appointment with opportunities for renewal, subject to ongoing need and satisfactory performance. Demonstrated achievement may also lead to advancement to the rank of Associate Professor, either on an open or term contract. The role requires residency in Singapore.

The main responsibilities of the position are to:

  • Develop, co-ordinate, and deliver undergraduate teaching within the HeLP programme.
  • Contribute to all aspects of good educational governance, including oversight of assessment practices and audits, serving on relevant medical school committees, and co-ordinating the training and allocation of teaching staff.
  • Lead new teaching and learning initiatives for students, including the development of educational activities in the health humanities, and the expansion of extra-curricular opportunities for student participation in ethics and humanities research projects.
  • Contribute to other educational programmes within CBmE (postgraduate and/or continuing education for health professionals), if time permits.
  • Participate in identifying and contributing to new educational research activities in ethics, law and professionalism, or in the health humanities.
  • Provide academic support within CBmE, such as assisting to organise national and international conferences and meetings, or educational development workshops.
  • Communicate effectively with a wide range of stakeholders about CBmE’s educational activities and impacts.
  • Strengthen existing relationships with key educational partners across NUS.

Essential requirements for this position:

  • A PhD in a relevant subject. For medical doctors, a PhD is not required if you can demonstrate i) postgraduate level training in a relevant subject, and ii) an extensive track record of teaching ethics, law and professionalism to medical students or other health professional students.
  • Extensive knowledge across core topics in healthcare ethics, health law and professionalism
  • Demonstrable experience of relevant teaching. Appointment at the level of Senior Lecturer will require 5 years of relevant teaching experience.
  • Familiarity with educational models for teaching and learning ethics to medical or other health professional students, and a solid grasp of approaches for integrating ethics, law and professionalism.
  • Creativity in educational contributions, with a demonstrable ability to spark engagement, interest and curiosity in students.
  • Demonstrable evidence of successful teaching performance through student feedback, peer feedback, or other methods.
  • Proficiency in educational software and technology; familiarity with blended modes of learning and flipped classroom design.
  • Demonstrated aptitude for collaborative as well as independent working.
  • Strong organisation and management skills.
  • Excellent written and spoken English

Desirable requirements for this position:

  • A teaching qualification in university-level education.
  • Preference will be given to those with teaching experience in a medical school or other health professional training environment.
  • Experience in curriculum and assessment design.
  • Knowledge of Singaporean legal, regulatory and other health professional frameworks.
  • Knowledge of the health humanities, and experience in developing educational activities in the arts and humanities as applied to healthcare.
  • Proven track record (relative to career opportunity) of publications and presentations at international or national conferences, particularly in medical and health professions education.
