An exciting opportunity has arisen within the School of Veterinary Medicine and Science for an individual to join our team as a Core Support Technician. This team ensures the smooth and safe operation of the school’s research laboratories and associated facilities, including support for the newly refurbished Elms Annex, home to the One Virology groups within the Wolfson Centre for Global Virus Research.
Technicians play a crucial role in maintaining the research environment and supporting daily operations across a wide range of laboratories. Their responsibilities include essential housekeeping and safety duties such as the collection and cleaning of laboratory glassware and plastics, the safe deactivation and disposal of clinical and biological waste, and the operation of autoclaves, drying ovens, and glasswashers. They also assist with the preparation of basic media and reagents, monitor gas and liquid nitrogen levels, and support the movement and replacement of gas cylinders.
In addition, the role includes assisting with stores operations, processing deliveries, fulfilling internal requisitions, and maintaining accurate records. The technician will also drive school vehicles to collect samples from external suppliers and ensure vehicles are maintained and presentable.
We are seeking a candidate with excellent interpersonal skills and strong oral and written communication abilities. They should demonstrate a methodical approach to tasks, ensuring deadlines are met and the ability to work effectively under pressure. The candidate should also be capable of understanding and addressing non-routine work effectively. Previous experience in a laboratory environment and in operating heavy machinery would be desirable.
The ideal candidate will possess good manual dexterity and must be able to lift and move objects, as this role involves storing and moving consumables and equipment. Additionally, a full UK driving license is required as the role involves driving school vehicles.
Candidates must have a minimum of GCSEs (grade C and above) in Maths and English or equivalent or have relevant work experience in a similar technical role.
This is a permanent, full-time role (36.25 hours per week). Requests for secondment from internal candidates may be considered on the basis that prior agreement has been sought from both your current line manager and the manager of your substantive post, if you are already undertaking a secondment role.
Informal enquiries may be addressed to Maxine Fowler: email maxine.fowler@nottingham.ac.uk. Please note that applications sent directly to this email address will not be accepted.
