The primary role of the Wellbeing officer is to act as a named point of contact for disabled students and students that need pastoral support and, in liaison with the Student Accessibility Service (SAS), to develop and ensure implementation of Individual learning plans and co-ordinate support for students in the learning and teaching environment of the department, support students with wellbeing and advocating for students when needed to ensure a satisfactory and enjoyable learning journey. 

Position

Key Activities & Responsibilities 

• Develop and implement Individual Learning Plans (ILPs) and ensure reasonable adjustments are applied.
• Act as first point of contact for disabled students and those with specific learning difficulties.
• Provide 1:1 support, group sessions, and workshops on wellbeing and mental health.
• Manage a complex caseload of students and ensure continuity of support.
• Provide specialist guidance on DSA applications, assessment adjustments, and departmental policies.
• Liaise with academic and non-academic departments to implement adjustments and support transitions.
• Monitor workloads and manage risks related to single points of failure.
• Report safeguarding concerns and maintain confidentiality in all interactions.
• Contribute to service development, policy review, and embedding best practices.
• Maintain accurate records, case notes, and reports for SMT and departmental monitoring.

Requirements

Qualifications and Experience 

Essential 

• Relevant honours degree (or equivalent experience) and professional qualifications or experience in supporting diverse learners.
• Knowledge of mental health, neurodiversity, and the learning and communication needs of disabled students.
• Experience in pastoral support and one-to-one work with students in a Higher Education setting.
• Strong interpersonal, communication, organisational, and customer service skills.
• Ability to liaise with departments and external agencies to implement supportive strategies.
• Understanding of Equality Act 2010, safeguarding principles, and the Disabled Students’ Allowances process.
• Experience managing a caseload of disabled students and supervising/managing staff and resources.
• IT proficiency, including Microsoft Office and database use.
• Problem-solving, decision-making, project management, and creative approaches to challenges.
• Commitment to equality, diversity, and fostering a supportive, collaborative, and motivational environment for students. 

Desirable 

• Experience supporting students with a wide range of disabilities in a Higher Education setting.
• Knowledge of safeguarding principles, including the Prevent agenda.
• Understanding of the Equality Act 2010 and its implications for education.
• Experience managing a caseload of disabled students and supporting staff performance.
• Experience working with people from diverse cultural backgrounds.
• Qualifications in Psychology, teaching, or relevant sector experience.
• Familiarity with relevant legislation and codes of practice (e.g., QAA).
• Involvement with professional bodies related to student welfare and success.
• Ability to identify appropriate resources and support agencies for students.
• Experience developing and maintaining professional networks within the education sector.
