The Centre for the Study of Existential Risk (CSER) within the Institute for Technology and Humanity (ITH) seeks to appoint a Teaching Associate. The successful candidate will be expected to take up the appointment as soon as possible and before February 2026.

The post will provide additional support for the new MPhil in Global Risk and Resilience. The role holder will contribute to teaching and examining for the MPhil.

This temporary appointment will work closely with the course leaders, Postgraduate Co-ordinator and existing Teaching Associate, adding to the Institutes capacity to provide an exceptional student experience. Applications are welcome from PhD-holders with teaching experience, excellent communication skills and the potential to contribute to ITH's research output. The post would suit someone interested in increasing their teaching experience, shaping a new postgraduate course and developing their own interests related to reducing global catastrophic risk.

The Centre for the Study of Existential Risk produces world-leading research on risks that could lead to human extinction or civilisational collapse. It is also a hub for academics, technologists and policymakers, where the team is expected to work across theoretical and practical specialisms and to generate impact outside academia. The new MPhil will help define best research practices and credential new cohorts of researchers and practitioners. It will build a larger and more impactful community, taking this emerging field into new sectors and geographies.

Key activities associated with the role include:

  • Support delivery of modules
  • Supervise students and mark assessments
  • Co-lead monitoring of student attainment, wellbeing and feedback
  • Play an active role in the life and work of CSER and ITH

Applicants must have:

  • A PhD in a relevant field
  • Experience of successfully developing and delivering teaching at university level as well as formal and informal assessment
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including engaging a diverse group of learners and encouraging the commitment to learn in others
  • The ability to maintain and develop knowledge connected to the Centre's field of study

The funds for this post are available for 12 months in the first instance.
