Location: Bristol
Salary: £43,482 to £67,486 per annum, Grade: J / K / L
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Permanent
Placed On: 10th October 2025
Closes: 16th October 2025
Job Ref: ACAD108269

The Role

The School of Civil, Aerospace and Design Engineering (CADE) is seeking to appoint a permanent Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in Engineering with Artificial Intelligence (AI). This reflects the School’s strategic commitment to AI in engineering, following Bristol’s recent recognition as “AI University of the Year.”

We welcome applicants with strong academic or industrial research backgrounds. You should demonstrate deep knowledge of your research area and present clear plans for future research that complement and expand existing activities.

This post will support the launch of a new MSc in Engineering with AI (first intake September 2026). The successful candidate will contribute to the design, delivery, and potentially leadership of this programme. You will also support undergraduate teaching in machine learning (ML) and AI across our Aero, Civil, and Design programmes, all ranked in the UK’s top five.

If you’re passionate about advancing engineering science through AI and eager to collaborate with leading experts, we encourage you to apply. Appointment will be at Grade J, K (Lecturer), or L (Senior Lecturer), depending on experience and qualifications.

What Will You Be Doing?

You will contribute to research, teaching, and academic administration at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Senior Lecturers will take on leadership roles in developing and overseeing research and teaching, with a significant contribution to strategic planning and management.

Lecturers (Grades J/K) will actively support the School’s teaching and research while building independent portfolios. Senior Lecturers (Grade L) should demonstrate a strong track record in independent research, securing funding, strategic development, and leadership within academic teams.

Main Purpose of the Role

  • Deliver high-quality teaching on the new MSc Engineering with AI and support its management.
  • Conduct impactful research in ML and AI applied to engineering challenges.
  • Provide effective academic administration within CADE.
This post is on Pathway 1 (see Section 7 in Further Particulars).

You Should Apply If You Have:

  • A strong research background in ML/AI applied to engineering (e.g. aerodynamics, fluids, aeroacoustics, composites, structures, flight dynamics, control).
  • Proven ability to conduct independent research and collaborate effectively.
  • A clear, innovative vision for future research that enhances CADE’s current strengths.
  • A passion for teaching and delivering engaging, high-quality education in ML/AI.
  • A collaborative approach to both research and teaching.
