The Department of Information Systems, Business Statistics and Operations Management at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology invites applications for PhD positions within the Business Statistics Group of the department.

Our Business Statistics PhD program provides foundational training in mathematical statistics and its applications to fields such as finance, economics and data science. Students benefit from close mentorship and cutting-edge research opportunities with our internationally recognized faculty. Major research areas of our faculty include financial econometrics, high-dimensional statistics, machine learning, nonparametric statistics, portfolio theory and stochastic processes

Our PhD program comprises a 2-year MPhil Phase with courses aimed at building a strong foundation for independent research and a 3-year PhD Phase focused on academic research and dissertation writing.

Who Are We Looking For? 

We encourage students with a strong background in Mathematics, Probability Theory and Statistics to apply. While prior knowledge of finance and economics is not required, interest in applications of statistical models to such fields is a plus.

Our MPhil and PhD students receive a tax-exempt stipend of HK$19,135 per month. Outstanding candidates are strongly encouraged to apply for the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS). If successful, the monthly stipend will increase to HK$28,400 plus additional benefits. More details can be found here

How To Apply 

Interested candidates are invited to submit their applications via the Graduate School by December 1. Please indicate Operations Management (Business Statistics) as the primary area. 

Required documents include a letter of motivation, a CV, transcripts of records and degree certificates, a research proposal, 1-3 academic letters of recommendation, a proof of English proficiency (TOEFL/IELTS) and standardized test results (GMAT or GRE).
