About us

UCL’s Department of Computer Science (CS) is a top-ranked Computer Science Department in the UK. In the 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF) evaluation, UCL Computer Science was ranked second in the UK for research power and first in England. The UCL Hawkes Institute combines methodological researchers from the Departments of CS and Medical Physics & Biomedical Engineering (MPBE) with biomedical and clinical groups in the School of Life and Medical Sciences. The interface of engineering with medicine, where Hawkes specialises, is a dynamic and exciting place to do cutting-edge research. Hawkes is a world leader in medical imaging research, with particular strengths in artificial intelligence and machine learning applied to healthcare. The candidate will join the Machine-learning, AI, Neuro Imaging Focusing On Longevity and Dementia (MANIFOLD lab, https://manifold.cs.ucl.ac.uk/), led by Prof James Cole, and work closely with colleagues at the NHNN and the UCLH Biomedical Research Centre (BRC).

About the role

The role involves working at the UCL Hawkes Institute collaborating closely with the National Hospital for Neurology & Neurosurgery (NHNN) to work on a large-scale medical imaging analysis project, using the joint text-vision netowrks to train models to assist in radiological decision-making for brain or prostate MRI scans. The role will involve interacting with several large imaging datasets with matching radiology reports, designing and training deep-learning models and preparing project reports and presentations and leading on manuscripts for conference/journal submission.

About you

The candidate will have a PhD in either computer science or medical imaging, and requires skills in managing and processing imaging data, running code (e.g., Python) on remote computing systems (e.g., HPC cluster, cloud server). Experience with natural language processing and in particular joint-text vision models would be highly beneficial. While technical skills are important for the role, coordination ability will also be crucial as the role will involve managing large imaging datasets, running data processing tasks and assisting report preparation. Excellent internal and external communication skills are required, and demonstrable evidence of an interest in translational research will be valued. A job description and person specification can be accessed at the bottom of this page. If you have any queries regarding the vacancy or the application process, please contact James Cole (james.cole@ucl.ac.uk)..
