Primary supervisor - Prof Larissa Samuelson
We invite applications to an exciting opportunity for fully-funded a PhD studentship working on a cutting-edge project examining early word learning and vocabulary development. The PhD position is part of the EU Synergy Project SHAPE (https://www.ntnu.edu/shape/home) which is examining the interaction of language and thought and specifically the visual perception of object shape and its encoding in languages across the world. The successful candidate will work with Prof. Larissa Samuelson on a longitudinal study tracking how children from 24- to 42-months of age generalize names for novel objects and how their vocabulary develops. The study will focus on children at risk for language delay as we seek to understand how early difficulties in vocabulary development and encoding of object shape information may be related to later language difficulties.
We encourage applications from highly motivated candidates with a strong academic background in psychology, cognitive science or a related discipline, and a keen interest in developmental research. Prior experience with experimental design, data analysis (preferably in R) or developmental populations is highly desirable but not essential. The successful candidate will join a vibrant and supportive research team with access to excellent facilities and opportunities for professional development.
Key Features of the Project:
Opportunity to join an exciting project with international collaborators in the EU, USA and Japan
Involvement in cutting-edge developmental and cognitive science research as part of UEA’s world leading Developmental Science Research Group and Developmental Dynamics Laboratory
Work with leading researchers in a collaborative and interdisciplinary environment
Comprehensive training and support throughout your PhD
If you’re ready to take on a challenging and rewarding project that will advance our understanding of human cognitive development, we would be very pleased to hear from you.
