Job Ref: 3629

We are seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Researcher for a three-year position in numerical modelling of the world’s ice sheets. The role is part of PRECISE: Prediction of Climate Change and Effect of Mitigating Solutions, an international collaboration led by the Niels Bohr Institute and funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation.

About the Role

You will conduct large-scale simulations of ice flow in Greenland and Antarctica, exploring how these ice sheets will evolve in a warming climate. By applying numerical and analytical approaches, you will investigate the complex interactions between the ice, atmosphere, and ocean systems.

Research themes within the project include (but are not limited to):

  • Surface elevation mass balance feedbacks
  • Calving processes
  • Marine Ice Sheet Instability

While you will be working with an an established ice-flow model, you will be encouraged to work with the team at Northumbria to develop and test new ideas, improving the physical representation of critical processes within existing model frameworks.

Research Environment

You will join Northumbria University’s Future of Ice on Earth research group, one of the largest and most active ice-sheet modelling communities in the world. The project provides opportunities to collaborate closely with international partners, participate in scientific project meetings, and present your work at leading conferences and workshops.

About You

We welcome applications from candidates with a strong interest in climate science and ice dynamics. You should have:

  • A background in Physics, Applied Mathematics, Earth Science, or a related discipline
  • Skills in numerical modelling, programming, and handling large datasets
