Description of Post

The Office of the Registrar and Chief Academic Officer (R&CAO) is responsible for the leadership and overall coordination of academic policies and academic quality assurance, along with the provision of all student support services in the University. Working directly with the Deans of Faculty and other heads of function, the Office of the R&CAO works to ensure and promote the quality and development of the academic programme portfolio, planning to ensure sustained relevance and effectiveness.

The Academic Governance and Compliance Manager reports directly to the R&CAO and will work closely with other senior managers within the Office of the R&CAO responsible for academic affairs, quality, learning, students, global and marketing as well as with Deans of Faculty and Heads of School and Department across the University.  The person appointed will also work with wide range of other academic and professional service staff across the University.

Within the context of the work of the Office of the R&CAO, the broad areas of responsibility of the Academic Governance and Compliance Manager include the following:

  • Manage academic governance and compliance matters for the Office of the R&CAO and be responsible for policy, long-range planning, budgeting and personnel within the function.
  • Support the Secretary to the Academic Council and take responsibility for some of the functions of the Secretary from time to time. Manage the administration of Academic Council and coordinate the administrative support for all of its subcommittees.
  • Manage the reporting framework for all of the functions under the R&CAO. Coordinate the reporting to Academic Council, Governing Body and the Senior Leadership Team and ensure that all action items arising are dealt with in a timely manner.
  • Oversee the development and approval processes for subsidiary strategies under the Office of the R&CAO arising from the University’s Strategic Plan.
  • Work with Deans of Faculty, Faculty Managers and Chief Officers to ensure that Faculty and Chief Officer Annual Reports are submitted in a timely manner.
  • Support the identification, monitoring and reporting of risk and compliance with the Internal Control Framework within all functions under the Office of the R&CAO.
  • Engage in a process of continuous improvement, including the development of a Quality Improvement Plan and associated monitoring and reporting.

Essential Qualifications

Minimum

Candidates must have:

  • Honors Primary Degree in any discipline or equivalent professional qualification.
  • A minimum of 5 years post qualification relevant experience

Desirable

  • A post-graduate qualification
  • Experience working in academic governance and compliance, ideally in a higher education setting.
  • Excellent communication, analytical and report writing skills.
  • Effective people management and problem-solving skills.
  • Management experience at an appropriate level, including leading teams and managing resources.
  • The ability to lead, manage and motivate teams to deliver to targets and deadlines.
  • High level of ICT skills and knowledge of information management systems.
  • Proven track record of working effectively within a regulatory framework.
  • Knowledge of quality policies and procedures in operation in higher education.
  • Budget management experience.
