UCL is a diverse global community of world-class academics, students, industry partners, and alumni. With 30 Nobel laureates and a top ranking in the UK for research strength, we are a global leader in higher education.
The Faculty of Engineering is the largest in the UK, ranked second in Europe for impact and first in the UK for research strength (REF). Within it, CEGE is internationally recognised for its multidisciplinary excellence in research and teaching, ranked in the global top 50 for civil and structural engineering (QS 2021). The CEGE Civil Engineering workshop, based in Bloomsbury, supports the department’s academic and research activities through the design, manufacture, and testing of bespoke scientific equipment.
CEGE also operates two major off-site facilities:
About the Role
We are seeking a skilled and motivated Civil Engineering Workshop Manager to lead the operations of our Bloomsbury-based workshop. This is a hands-on leadership role, central to the delivery of CEGE’s research and teaching activities.
You will manage a team of technical staff, including apprentices, and oversee the safe and efficient running of the workshop. Your responsibilities will include the design and fabrication of bespoke experimental equipment, advising on materials and manufacturing methods, and supporting the development of complex test rigs and prototypes.
The role requires regular collaboration with academics, researchers, and students, contributing to undergraduate and postgraduate projects. You will also spend part of your week supporting technicians at our Dagenham facilities, ensuring consistent technical standards across all CEGE sites.
You will be responsible for health and safety compliance, including LOLER and PUWER regulations, and will operate a wide range of workshop machinery. Experience with CNC, laser cutters, and 3D printers is desirable; training will be provided.
About You
You will hold an HND, HNC, or equivalent experience in a relevant engineering discipline, with a strong background in high-tech or precision engineering. Experience in higher education or research is desirable.
You will have proven leadership skills, with the ability to manage and develop technical teams, including apprentices. A sound understanding of health and safety legislation in workshop environments is essential, along with hands-on experience using traditional workshop machinery. Familiarity with digital fabrication tools is a plus.
