About the role:

We are looking for an exceptional candidate with a relevant PhD, strong epidemiological and quantitative skills and experience of research about the impacts of the environment on health. The Research Associate will contribute to a range of multidisciplinary public health research projects within the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, School of Public Health. Working as part of the Health Protection Research Unit (HPRU) in Radiation Threats and Hazards and collaborating with the UK Small Area Health Statistics Unit (SAHSU), the postholder will support research on social, environmental, and health determinants across programmes such as the Social and Environmental Determinants of Health (SEDH), Public Health Impacts of the UK’s Clean Air Zones (PHICAZ), and the Dementia Trials Accelerator Programme.

This position offers an opportunity to work within a leading academic environment, developing research skills in environmental and population health while contributing to projects addressing major public health challenges.

Your research will use the SAHSU research database which is a secure repository of national demographic data from the Office for National Statistics and health and healthcare utilization information from NHS England that is all geo-spatially linked to social and environmental exposure data.

What you would be doing:

You will be responsible for independently undertaking appropriate research studies and contributing to the wider research within the group. You will plan and undertake epidemiological analysis, present your findings at meetings and submit your work for publication. You will also contribute to the supervision of postgraduate and undergraduate student research projects. Please see the Job Description for a full list of the key responsibilities for this post.

What we are looking for:

  • PhD in epidemiology, biostatistics or a closely related quantitative discipline, or equivalent research, industrial or commercial experience.
  • Knowledge of chronic disease epidemiology, health inequalities and the research methods applied in environmental epidemiology.
  • Experience of working with large, secure health data in appropriate software (e.g. R or ArcGIS).
  • Experience of working with the public, public engagement or public involvement.

Further Information

This is a full-time post (35 hours per week).

This role is for a fixed-term contract for 36 months.
