Role Summary

This exciting BBSRC funded post is within the research lab of Dr. Michelle Buckner, which sits within the School of Infection, Inflammation, and Immunology, and the Department of Microbes, Infection, and Microbiomes. The project will explore the impact of biofilm growth on the evolution of plasmid-mediated AMR and hyper-virulence.

You will provide technical expertise, support and guidance in research. You may supervise a number of technical staff but even where you do not directly supervise staff you will still be expected to act as a role model and coach others as appropriate.

You will need an in-depth understanding of the techniques and experimental protocols. You will be able to use your in-depth knowledge to advise on procedures, diagnose and resolve problems, and proactively suggest solutions to issues which arise. You may need to operate out of normal working hours to accommodate experimental procedures.

Person Specification

Experience with bacteriology is essential, specifically experience with sterile culture of bacteria, cloning bacterial genes, classical microbiological assays (including antimicrobial susceptibility assays, plasmid conjugation assays, growth kinetics). Experience with molecular biology techniques including PCR and quantitative PCR, flow cytometry, biofilm growth and assessment, and bacterial evolution would be beneficial.

Informal enquiries can be made to Michelle Buckner (m.buckner@bham.ac.uk)
