The NERC CREATES (Cambridge Research Experience and Advanced Training for Environmental Scientists) programme will nurture and train diverse cohorts of environmental scientists to meet the societal challenges and comprises ~170 academic supervisors across the University of Cambridge (departments of Earth Sciences; Zoology; Plant Sciences; Chemistry; Geography; Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics; Genetics; Archaeology and the British Antarctic Survey), and ~30 from collaborating partners.  

The CREATES doctoral training programme is seeking to appoint a Training and Inclusive Support Co-ordinator (TISC) which will be a part-time role at 0.5FTE. The Training and Inclusive Support Co-ordinator (TISC) will provide and facilitate the training and welfare support for the CREATES Postgraduate students and will play a crucial role in supporting the development of training materials and facilitating training delivery over the studentship lifecycle. The TISC will be required to personally deliver some training directly to graduate students and will also provide pastoral and wellbeing support for the Postgraduate students, providing guidance and signposting as necessary to other support networks in the University. 

The post holder will be line managed by the Department's Business and Operations Manager and work closely with the Chair NERC DLA who will set day-to-day tasks and reporting requirements.

The post holder will be based at the Department of Earth Sciences, Downing site in central Cambridge, but may be required to travel across campus, to facilitate and deliver specific training sessions.  

Some of the key responsibilities of the TISC are:

  • Engage with Postgraduate (PGR) students on the CREATES programme to ascertain training needs, opportunities and formulate a personalised statement which incorporates training plan.
  • Coordinate and deliver cohort-building events: the induction event, an annual writing retreat, and postgraduate led seminar series.
  • Coordinate and facilitate cross-DLA events which link the CREATES cohort to other NERC DLAs. This includes an annual NERC DLA Careers Event with regional DLA.
  • Provide pastoral care and welfare support to PGR students and signpost to other welfare support resources across the University.
  • Support and guide the training of PGR students throughout their studentship, monitor progress and highlight any tutorial and pastoral areas of concern.
  • Facilitate internships for the PGRs which will provide experience and cross-sector training in transferable skills.

The post holder should have a degree in a relevant area of specialism or equivalent level of practical experience. They will be experienced in working in an administrative/project management role, with experience in the design, facilitation and delivery of training materials. The post holder will have excellent organisational skills, with the ability to manage their own workload to meet competing deadlines. 

Your communication and interpersonal skills should be exceptional, and you should be empathetic and understanding with the ability to handle difficult situations in a calm and professional manner.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available until 31 March 2027 in the first instance.
