Salary: Full time starting salary is normally in the range £47,389 to £56,535, with potential progression once in post to £63,606.

Role Summary

J-BJI, the Jinan University – University of Birmingham Joint Institute, is a joint venture based at the Panyu Campus, Jinan University, Guangzhou, China which took its first students in 2017. We currently deliver four BSc programmes in Mathematics, Mathematics with Economics, Mathematics with Statistics and Mathematics with Information Computing Science, attracting high quality undergraduates from across China. The programmes are taught entirely in English, with the mathematics component being delivered by the flying faculty team of 16 academic staff from the School of Mathematics at the University of Birmingham.

In this round of recruitment, we are looking to recruit one (or more) Assistant Professor(s). The post holder(s) will be based in the School of Mathematics in Birmingham and will be part of a team who deliver taught modules at our Joint Institute in Guangzhou, China. Delivery of these modules will be through month long trips to Guangzhou, of which a minimum of two per academic year will be assigned per academic. Staff will also undertake shorter ad hoc trips to Guangzhou to support orientation, graduation and other academic activities.

The post is in the area of Statistics and Data Science and will be appointed on a Teaching and Research basis. The successful candidate will be expected to make a significant contribution to the J-BJI programmes through teaching, and to the School more broadly by conducting high-quality research in related areas and by developing education in Statistics and Data Science. In addition, the successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to the school through management/leadership, and enterprise activities, as appropriate.

Person Specification

The minimum qualification is a PhD (or equivalent) in Mathematics or a related area. Candidates are expected to have or clearly be developing an internationally recognized research record, and a solid commitment to teaching, mentoring and service. Full consideration will be given to applicants whose research interests are in the emerging areas of Statistics and Data Science.
