The University of Plymouth is a distinctive and ambitious institution, rooted in the South West of England and reaching across the globe. With a mission to advance knowledge and transform lives, we are proud to be a civic university with international impact, delivering world-class education and research in areas ranging from marine science and environmental sustainability to healthcare, defence, law, and innovation.
As the city prepares to benefit from major investment through the Government’s Defence Industrial Strategy, the University is set to play a leading role in supporting growth in resilience, security-related, and wider civic activity, reinforcing its position as a key driver of regional transformation. At the same time, Plymouth continues to expand its global footprint through international partnerships and transnational education, delivering Plymouth degrees to students around the world and collaborating on research with global significance.
We are now seeking an exceptional individual to succeed Professor Simon Gaskell as Chair of the Board of Governors. This is a pivotal moment for Plymouth, as we refresh our strategy and navigate a rapidly evolving higher education landscape. The new Chair will play a critical role in shaping our future, supporting the Vice-Chancellor and Executive team, and ensuring the highest standards of governance and accountability.
We are looking for someone with extensive experience of strategic leadership and governance in complex organisations, who brings a track record of non-executive or chairing roles. The successful candidate will be commercially and politically astute, an excellent communicator, and skilled in engaging and influencing a wide range of stakeholders. They will be able to provide constructive challenge and support, and be deeply committed to the values of higher education and public service, including diversity, inclusion, and widening access.
The University of Plymouth is committed to equality, diversity and inclusion and welcomes applications from all backgrounds and communities.
Applications should be submitted by Friday 28 November 2025.
