Applications are invited for a Principal Heilbronn Fellow in Mathematics. This is a permanent academic position, subject to satisfactory completion of probation requirements. The appointment will be made at Grade 7 or 8 depending on the successful applicant’s level of experience.

During an initial three-year fellowship period, the holder will spend 50% of their time contributing to the classified research programme of the Heilbronn Institute for Mathematical Research (“internal research”), taking on a strategic leadership and facilitation role as well as making a substantial direct contribution to the research. The other 50% of the holder’s time will be spent in an academic role in the Department of Mathematics, with duties including their own independent academic research (“external research”) and contributing to the leadership of the Heilbronn project at the University. Teaching is not a major aspect of the role during the initial period, but opportunities will be available to gain teaching experience to meet probation and potential future promotion requirements. There may be opportunities to supervise PhD students if desired.

After the initial three-year fellowship period, depending on project requirements and funding availability there may be a continuation in a similar fellowship role, or otherwise the holder will transition to a standard academic teaching and research position at a comparable grade within the Department of Mathematics.

During the initial period the holder will have access to up to £2,500 per annum for research expenses, provided directly by the Heilbronn Institute, and will be able to bid for further funds from the Institute and from external sources.

The holder will be required to work in the Department of Mathematics and at the Heilbronn Institute’s office in Manchester. Travel to other locations may occasionally be required.
