Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Game Design and Development based in Hainan - China

As part of Abertay University’s continued evolution of its sector-leading programmes, we have partnered with Communication University of China (CUC) and are seeking to recruit a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in Game Design and Development, based in Hainan, China.

As a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Game Design and Development, you will provide student-centered teaching at undergraduate level across our joint game design and game art Honours degree provision.

We are particularly keen to attract applicants with academic experience and professional creative skills in a number of the following areas:

  • Concept development and game production
  • User experience and interaction design
  • Data-driven design and player analytics
  • Game mechanics and systems design
  • Game engine implementation, scripting and prototyping

To support the role holder, all teaching materials for the first term of delivery will be pre-prepared although, of course, we welcome an evolution of those materials from the role holder. We are also appointing a Lecturer/ Senior Lecturer in Game Art and Digital Media and the first term delivery (March to July) could be co-taught by both role holders. Local and remote support will also be available.

We will make appointments based on the experience of the applicant and in accordance with the grade structure established within the National Framework Agreement which has two Lecturer grades (Grade 7 and Grade 8) and a Senior Lecturer grade (Grade 9). The successful candidate will be offered a market competitive gross salary ranging from £38,784.49 - £67,468.52 per annum, as benchmarked in accordance with sector practice in China, taking into account your experience, performance and grade of the position in China.

Individuals will be responsible for any worldwide taxes and social security arising on your income. This includes, but is not limited to, University income (unless otherwise agreed) and personal income such as bank interest, dividend income and rental income.

If required, support to relocate to China will be provided, individuals will receive a tax briefing from our tax advisors in both your home country and China. The purpose of these briefings is to help you feel comfortable with your tax affairs in each country. They are not designed to provide you with tax planning/advice.  Home country is defined as the country where you are tax resident immediately prior to this move. Any taxes due on this benefit will be settled by the University.  Tax return support may also be provided by the University in China and your home country, for the tax year of your relocation where this is necessary, and you do not ordinarily file a tax return in that country. In this case you are expected to maintain records and provide tax data to our tax advisors on a timely basis to support compliance.

You will receive a monthly pension allowance in lieu of a pension.

You and your accompanying dependents will be provided with private medical insurance by the University. This is subject to the disclosure of any known pre-existing medical conditions.

You will receive a tax-free relocation allowance (typically 10% of your salary up to a maximum of £8000) to support the costs of your relocation to China.  Such costs may include, but are not limited to – flights, shipping, temporary accommodation, purchasing excess baggage, ground transportation to/from airport etc.

The relocation allowance will be paid in the first payroll run after your arrival in China.

Understanding and adapting to cultural differences is critical to the success of an international relocation. The University emphasises the importance of cultural awareness and expects you and your eligible dependents to demonstrate cultural sensitivity in all professional and personal interactions. It is the intent of the University that you are aware of the social economic and political environment in China.  To support this, the University may offer cultural services tax-free, such as cultural training programs and online courses, to assist in this transition.  While the University provides these resources, you and your dependents are encouraged to take personal responsibility for actively learning and understanding the cultural nuances in China.

Any offer will be contingent upon having and retaining a valid right to work in China and providing the necessary documentation in support of this. (In this regard, the University will support the visa process and any associated costs for you and your dependents defined as your spouse/partner and two children under the age of 18 or up to the age of 21 and in full-time education who will live with you on a year-round basis in China.

It is the responsibility of any spouse/partner to obtain necessary work authorisation documents to comply with immigration requirements if they intend to work in China.
