Chain Florey Senior Clinical Research Fellow in Cardiac Imaging (pre- or post-CCT)

Imperial College London - Institute of Clinical Sciences

Location: London
Salary: £109,724 to £145,477 per annum
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 21st October 2025
Closes: 7th November 2025
Job Ref: MED05482

About the role:

The Chain Florey Transition-to-Independence (TTI) Fellowship provides funding for salary, consumables, and technical support for clinician scientists who have recently completed or are about to complete clinical training (CCT). This fellowship supports those engaged in mechanistic discovery science or experimental medicine, offering up to 36 months of funding to develop an externally funded intermediate clinician scientist research proposal, including preliminary data generation.

The Chain Florey TTI Fellowship fills a critical gap in clinical academic career progression, addressing the challenge clinician scientists face post-CCT when they are no longer eligible for clinical lecturer posts but not yet competitive for 5-year clinician scientist fellowships.

This post is designed for applicants with a research interest in machine learning or data science approaches for patient stratification and genetic association analyses using cardiac magnetic resonance imaging in biobank populations. Successful candidates will work with Prof Declan O’Regan in the Computational Cardiac Imaging Group as part of a British Heart Foundation-funded programme exploring the transition from health to disease through imaging-genetics.

What you would be doing:

The role offers 80% protected research time and 20% clinical time to maintain competency. You will develop a highly competitive application for national or international funding, supported by preliminary data and a full mentorship programme. This opportunity is aimed at candidates who meet the person specification and demonstrate outstanding potential to become leaders in clinical translational medicine.

What we are looking for:

Applicants must hold a PhD and have CCT or be due to obtain it within 12 months (or equivalent) at the time of application. The fellowship lasts up to 3 years full-time, with the option to maintain clinical work one day per week, typically supported by an Honorary Consultant contract with Imperial College Healthcare or another NHS Trust.

What we can offer you:

  • Protected research time (80% research, 20% clinical) to build a competitive funding application
  • Full mentorship support to guide your development
  • Opportunity to continue your career at a world-leading institution
  • Tailored training programmes for clinical staff, transparent promotion processes, and career support
  • Competitive salary and benefits, including 41 days annual leave and generous pension schemes
  • Inclusive, diverse, and collaborative work culture with staff networks and wellbeing resources

Further Information

This is a full-time, fixed-term post for up to three years (part-time considered). Proposed projects should align with Prof O’Regan’s Computational Cardiac Imaging Group. Candidates are encouraged to discuss their interests before applying.

Please submit a 1-page project outline, full CV with publication list, and cover letter. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to interview and asked to present a detailed research proposal. Applications must be submitted online.

For questions, visit the LMS website or contact Prof Declan O’Regan (declan.oregan@lms.mrc.ac.uk) or Aurelie Tromp, Chain Florey Programme coordinator (a.tromp@lms.mrc.ac.uk).

As this post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974, a satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, at the appropriate level, will be required for the successful candidate.
