Researcher in X-Ray Tomographic Imaging Experiments and Data Analysis

Technical University of Denmark

Location: Lyngby - Denmark
Salary: Based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Permanent, Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 22nd October 2025
Closes: 15th November 2025

Are you passionate about tomographic image analysis and ready to contribute to cutting-edge materials science?

We are looking for a researcher to join the DanMAX team at MAX IV in Lund, Sweden, focusing on experimental 3D X-ray imaging and data analysis.

DanMAX is a Danish-funded materials science beamline at MAX IV, one of the world’s most advanced synchrotron light sources. With its high-brilliance X-ray beam, DanMAX offers excellent phase contrast imaging capabilities and enables unique experiments across fields ranging from engineering materials to biology. DanMAX is also, besides imaging, designed for X-ray diffraction experiments, including 2D and 3D resolved techniques like scanning µXRD+XRF and XRD-CT. To ensure these experiments lead to high-impact science, we’re seeking a candidate who can bridge beamline operations and advanced image analysis.

Responsibilities and qualifications

You will become part of the DanMAX beamline team and work closely with users, supporting both experiments and data analysis. The user support will occasionally include odd hours and weekends/holidays. You will also help further develop our in-house tomographic reconstruction pipeline, reconBlazer, and contribute to building streamlined, standardized analysis workflows.

You will be employed by the Section for Visual Computing at DTU Compute, but will be stationed at MAX IV in Lund, Sweden. Through the QIM Center—a collaboration between DTU, Lund University, and the University of Copenhagen—you will also be part of a strong network of researchers working on X-ray image analysis across institutions. We expect you to collaborate with other QIM researchers and regularly visit DTU Compute and the 3D Imaging Center at DTU. Through your work at the beamline, you will also interact with other MAX IV groups and support teams at MAX IV.

We expect you to engage in research and development at DanMAX, collaborating with the beamline team. Building on the analysis tools and experience already established, we expect that you will contribute with analysis that leads to standardized analysis pipelines and procedures that will ensure that the time from experiment to results is short. Hereby, DanMAX impacts the field of tomographic research through fast publications of the latest experimental results.

This position offers an excellent foundation for a career in 3D imaging at either universities, large-scale research infrastructure, or the private sector.

Your primary tasks will be to:

  • Be an active member of the DanMAX beamline team, supporting users with experiment planning, execution, and data analysis.
  • Further develop and maintain our tomographic reconstruction and processing pipeline, reconBlazer.
  • Carry out independent research in 3D image analysis using data from full-field X-ray imaging experiments at DanMAX.
  • Collaborate with QIM researchers and help align the development of new image analysis methods with the needs of beamline experiments.
  • Take part in advising MAX IV on infrastructure requirements for tomography reconstruction and analysis.

Formal Qualifications:

  • You must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent)

The position is part of DTU’s Tenure Track program. Read more about the program and the recruitment process here
