We are seeking a talented and motivated Postdoctoral Research Associate (PDRA) to join the Energy and Power Research Group for a 12-month appointment to develop, implement and test a numerical model for arcs in vacuum circuit breakers. This project is conducted in partnership with an international switchgear manufacturer to understand how the electrical arcs in vacuum circuit breakers interact with the electrical contacts and magnetic field to influence the fault current interruption process.
The PDRA will contribute mainly to the arc modelling part of the project and play an active role in organising and conducting a comprehensive literature review on existing knowledge and understanding relating to vacuum arcs, leading the establishment of a mathematic model for metal vapour arcs burning in vacuum background, and implementing the arc model in a commercial software package (Ansys Fluent).
