About Us

The School of Life Course & Population Sciences consists of experts in women and children’s health, nutritional sciences, population sciences and the molecular genetics of human disease.  Our research links the causes of common health problems to life’s landmark stages treating life, disease and healthcare as a continuum. The School is a multi-campus organisation, comprising of 5 Departments across 4 campuses.  

About the role

We are looking for a technician to join the Laboratory of Professor Kevin O’Byrne, in the Department of Women and Children’s Health, King’s College London, Guy’s Hospital Campus.  Working within Professor O’Byrne’s teams, the post holder will provide high quality technical support ensuring the efficient day to day running of laboratory, but most critically, they will undertake experiments using the latest cutting-edge technologies, including optogenetics, chemogenetics, and in-vivo electrophysiological and mini-endoscopic calcium imaging of neuronal activity, supporting the research projects and wider initiatives of the School.  Current projects include examining the operational characteristics of the central regulator of the reproductive system, impact of stress on fertility and role of emotional limbic brain in reproduction and sexual behaviour.

This is a full-time post (35 hours per week), and you will be offered an a fixed term contract until 30th of September 2028.

About You

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

Essential criteria

  1. Minimum level 3 qualification (e.g. A levels, AS levels, International Baccalaureate diploma or other level 3 qualification) plus work experience in a relevant technical/scientific post or considerable knowledge and skills gained through work experience in a relevant technical or scientific post
  2. Working experience of the following - Histology, Molecular Biology (PCR, genotyping), Fluorescence microscopy, Immunoassay and in vivo experimentation (either recently held or currently hold a Home Office Personal Licence, PIL)
  3. Ability to manage own workload within the parameters of an agreed work plan, responding to changing priorities and an evolving environment/context, maximising the efficiency of the technical support being provided
  4. Ability to use well-developed analytical and problem-solving skills to resolve routine and complex problems that arise
  5. Communicate information in a clear and precise way, both orally and in writing
  6. Contribute to ideas for improving current working methods and procedures
  7. Proficient computer skills including data and statistical analysis using Microsoft Office or an equivalent package

Desirable criteria

  1. Engage in Continuing Professional Development and training initiatives, in line with the Technician Commitment and Research Concordat
  2. Collaborate with colleagues to share good practices and support wider sustainable initiatives and suggest new ideas where you see that improvements could be made
  3. BSc in any science topic
