We wish to appoint a Research Fellow to support research into understanding and improving outcomes for children, adolescents and young adults (AYA) with cancer. We have a vibrant research programme focusing on measuring and improving quality of life for children and young people with cancer, and you will be contributing to projects within this programme. Children and young people face a unique experience when they have cancer because of their different cancers, treatment and their developmental trajectory. More science is needed in this area.
Our research programme includes a very exciting international European Commission funded project, called STRONG-AYA (STRONG-AYA | Young cancer | Youth cancer | Cancer | Cancer research), focused on improving the lives of young people with cancer. In addition, the programme includes projects embedded in the EORTC Quality of Life Group (https://qol.eortc.org/) which focuses on understanding quality of life issues for children with cancer during treatment, as well as longer-term outcomes of survivors of childhood or AYA cancer.
The work will involve interviewing young people and health professionals, analysing qualitative and quantitative data, report writing, writing for publication, developing new research ideas, and collaborating with partners across Europe. Standard DBS Clearance will be required for this role.
You will have a relevant PhD or equivalent research-related qualifications and experience in a relevant area and a keen interest in the field of health psychology and the well-being of young people with cancer. Excellent organisational and communication skills are also essential for this role, and the ability to travel to selected locations. This post is full time (100% FTE) until 31st of March 2027. Flexible working, part-time/ job share will be considered.
Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
Informal enquiries are very welcome. Please contact Professor Anne-Sophie Darlington (A.Darlington@soton.ac.uk) for further information.
