Chief Research Laboratory Technician (Fixed Term)

University of Cambridge - Department of Physiology, Development and Neuroscience

Location: Cambridge
Salary: £31,236 to £35,608
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 5th November 2025
Closes: 28th November 2025
Job Ref: PM47839

The Department of Physiology, Development and Neuroscience (PDN) is seeking a highly motivated and proactive Chief Research Laboratory Technician to support the research activities of Professor Amanda Sferruzzi-Perri's group. The Sferruzzi-Perri Laboratory investigates how genetic and environmental factors influence fetal development, pregnancy, and long-term health of both the mother and offspring. The group focuses on understanding the role of the placenta, the organ that develops alongside the fetus and regulates nutrient transport and hormonal support during pregnancy, as a key mediator of these outcomes.

The laboratory uses mouse models involving genetic and environmental manipulations, combined with a broad range of whole-body, tissue, cellular, and molecular approaches. Complementary studies using cell and organoid cultures, human pregnancy samples, and clinical data aim to identify underlying mechanisms and support translation to human health.

The role holder will provide both technical expertise and operational leadership to support the group's expanding research programme. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys both hands-on experimental work and laboratory leadership, and who thrives in a collaborative, mission-driven research environment.

Candidates should be educated to BSc level or higher in a life sciences discipline and have prior experience in an academic or industrial research setting. You will have experience in managing animal colonies, as well as histology and molecular biology techniques. You will also have a strong interest in supporting developmental, pregnancy, and women's health research.

For more information about the role, and the skills and experience the successful candidate will have, please see the further particulars.

Fixed Term: the funds for this post are available for 3 years in the first instance.

This is strictly a non-remote post, offered on a full time basis, however, we are open to discussing part-time work arrangements to accommodate individual circumstances (minimum 80% FTE). The post is available from January 2026 onwards.

Informal enquiries about the position can be made to Prof Amanda Sferruzzi-Perri (ans48@cam.ac.uk).
